A Tribute to Steve Jobs

Posted: Thursday August 25, 2011 • Category: Cool New Technology

At R&M, our worldview of computers centers on Apple and the Apple world centers on Steve Jobs. Yes. We're one of "them", Mac people – the people that just don't understand why anyone would own a PC!

On Wednesday our worldview was shaken. It was announced that Steve Jobs, Apple's CEO and co-founder, has resigned due to his ongoing health issues. Without Job's vision, creativity and keen business leadership, what will happen to the company? Will co-founder Steve Wozniak make a return? Even if he did, Jobs was always the driving force behind the marketing and product development. And, what a list of life changing products: Apple (I and II), Macintosh (with famous 1984 Super Bowl ad), iMac, iPod, iTunes, iPhone, iPad, each product in its own way altering your daily life.

We wish Steve Jobs a speedy recovery.

As far as Apple is concerned, it will be an interesting road ahead.

Posted: Tuesday November 23, 2010 • Category: Cool New Technology

Have you ever seen one of these and wondered what it was?

It looks like a funky barcode, right? Well, that’s pretty much the gist, and we cannot get over how cool they are. What you see above is called a QR Code, which stands for “Quick Response.” Similar to a barcode, the little box above is meant to be scanned either by a QR scanner, a mobile phone with a camera or a smartphone. Once scanned, the information that appears can be in the form of text, a URL or other data.

Posted: Wednesday October 27, 2010 • Category: Cool New Technology

Interesting news from the experts at Arbitron that looks at the impact that smartphones have had on the way we conduct our everyday lives. People with smartphones use them for everything- to check the weather, shop for new clothes, pay their bills- the list goes on, and app developers look to make millions this year. Arbitron’s study, titled “Goin’ Mobile,” takes a look at how and why we use our smartphones and discovered some pretty fascinating results. Did you know that second most popular app next to Facebook was the Pandora radio app? Arbitron believes that this suggests “that radio’s decades of experience as an entertainment content provider makes the industry uniquely qualified to take a spot on consumers’ smartphone ‘app’ menus.”

Some of the study’s other conclusions are:

Happy Birthday, Google!

Posted: Monday September 27, 2010 • Category: Cool New Technology

Search engine giant, Google, celebrates its 12th birthday today. In honor of that, here are a few fun facts about the company.

The name "Google," is actually a play on the word "googol," which is the mathematical term for a 1 followed by 100 zeros. The name reflects the immense volume of information that exists, and the scope of Google's mission: to organize the world's information and make it universally accessible and useful.

Google Instant to Shift SEO Strategies

Posted: Thursday September 9, 2010 • Category: Cool New Technology

At Robmark Interactive, we are constantly striving to learn the latest and greatest on search engine optimization for our web clients, as it is continually changing and evolving. Yesterday, as we’re sure many of you have read, Google announced the launch of its new search interface, Google Instant. Google describes this as “a new search enhancement that shows results as you type.” Google Instant will allow users to scan search results while they’re typing them based on the top predicted results. Google estimates that this will cut down on the amount of time a person spends searching by an average of 2-5 seconds per search and 11 seconds per hour.

So what does this mean for SEO? A whole lot, actually, depending on how you look at it. While some people are predicting the end of SEO as we know it, others are seeing an infinite amount of possibilities in this industry. Google Instant will certainly shift some SEO strategies for those relying on both organic SEO methods and pay-per-click methods. Users will now only need to look at the first three to five results at the top of the page. If they don’t see what they’re looking for, they’ll simply adjust their search term(s) instead of scrolling down the page to keep looking or going to the next page. That means that search results will be more personalized and search terms will be more specific. Keywords, for example, will now be more like key phrases. The immediate implication is that now more than ever websites must contain unique and relevant content that directly answers their users’ queries.  It will be interesting to see how the SEO industry continues to progress as Google continues to provide users with a better, and now faster, user experience.  Google Instant is just the beginning.
